It’s here! Winter 2015-2016
Winter has been reluctant to make much of an appearance until now! Lake effect snow has dumped anywhere from an inch to almost 2 feet across New York. Of course the big winner is Osceola Tug Hill in Camden with a reported 22″ of new snow and all 40km of trails open, 25k track set. Visit their website | 315 599 -7377 | directions
Still some great Spring Skiing available for the weekend April 11-12. The Olympic Trails at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid will be open this weekend with 35km of trails. Also Osceola Tug Hill, Camden, NY is fully open with all 40km of trails open. See the full report here. Also some great recent photos/video on the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Facebook page.

XC-Ski Easter Weekend 2015
There’s plenty of great cross country skiing left across New York! This weekend will see areas with 100% coverage and some surprisingly good skiing for April. Weather forecasts are calling for (finally) some warm temperatures before the weekend – then things get interesting, at least for the Northern areas. Snow is likely late Friday night into Saturday with the potential for several inches to near a foot of new snow. A cold front for Sunday will preserve mid-winter snow surfaces for Easter Sunday – get out and enjoy it!
Open areas will include Lapland Lake in Benson, Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, Garnet Hill Lodge in North River, and Osceola Tug Hill in Camden, NY.
Well it should be all corn snow – maple syrup – and sunny Spring weather. But, true to this colder than normal winter, the weather is still stuck in winter mode even on the first day of Spring. The good news is that Southern areas have picked up some light snow on Friday and Northern areas might get a dash of new snow on Saturday night. Either way – the groomers are in charge and will provide some great skiing this weekend. Best bet is to call your favorite area and get a live report on snow surfaces and grooming progress. Check out the Ski Area Directory here for phone numbers and website links. The latest ski reports are here.

Incredibly great skiing continues – with mostly powder and packed powder midwinter cross country ski conditions. More cold weather (preserving that great skiing!) is in the forecast, but moderating from the below zero cold of earlier this month. Lots of great cross country skiing coupled with some wonderful events and festivals should keep everyone busy! See the updated ski reports here.
Great backcountry skiing is available – well anywhere! If you have a great Summer Trail – explore it in winter. Photo above is near North Creek on the Raymond Brook Ski Trail – more info here.

President’s Week 2015 – Awesome NY XC-Skiing!
It isn’t often that you can say the skiing can’t get any better – but this is one of those times. Fresh snow blankets the entire State and virtually every venue will be open this weekend and mostly all of next week. So make plans for a great ski week! Find a Ski Center here. I would add the benefits of groomed cross country ski trails is chiefly to pack that 2 or 3 feet of fresh snow!
First the weather – it is going to be cold. But, I haven’t seen the weather yet that is too cold for cross country skiing! Here’s a few hints. First, dress appropriately, no whimpy Spring Skiing outfits – this is real cold. Even for high aerobic cross country skiing consider an extra insulating layer this weekend. Wear downhill gloves of heavy mittens. Don’t be afraid to use hand and foot warmers. They’re only a couple of dollars at most ski shops. Take shorter ski trips and drink lots of hot drinks. Kids get cold easily so don’t tackle a long tour on a cold day – short and sweet – then go inside by the fire. Even below zero and windy has it’s own allure and magic. You will always be able to tell the story – remember that cold day skiing…
This might be a good opportunity to get out and enjoy some of the smaller ski centers that haven’t had this good a skiing in years. Try out Tree Haven Trails (Bob’s Trees), Galway, NY or Mountain Trails in Tannersville, NY or
