It’s here! Winter 2015-2016

Winter has been reluctant to make much of an appearance until now!  Lake effect snow has dumped anywhere from an inch to almost 2 feet across New York.  Of course the big winner is Osceola Tug Hill in Camden with a reported 22″ of new snow and all 40km of trails open, 25k track set.  Visit their website  |  315 599 -7377  |  directions

XC-Ski Easter Weekend 2015

XC-Ski Easter Weekend 2015

There’s plenty of great cross country skiing left across New York!  This weekend will see areas with 100% coverage and some surprisingly good skiing for April.  Weather forecasts are calling for (finally) some warm temperatures before the weekend – then things get interesting, at least for the Northern areas.  Snow is likely late Friday night into Saturday with the potential for several inches to near a foot of new snow.  A cold front for Sunday will preserve mid-winter snow surfaces for Easter Sunday – get out and enjoy it!

Open areas will include Lapland Lake in Benson, Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, Garnet Hill Lodge in North River, and Osceola Tug Hill in  Camden, NY.

Best bet with changeable weather is to call ahead for a live report.  Visit our Ski Area Directory here and current get Current Ski Reports here.

President’s Week 2015 – Awesome NY XC-Skiing!

President’s Week 2015 – Awesome NY XC-Skiing!

It isn’t often that you can say the skiing can’t get any better – but this is one of those times.  Fresh snow blankets the entire State and virtually every venue will be open this weekend and mostly all of next week.  So make plans for a great ski week!  Find a Ski Center here.  I would add the benefits of groomed cross country ski trails is chiefly to pack that 2 or 3 feet of fresh snow!

First the weather – it is going to be cold.  But, I haven’t seen the weather yet that is too cold for cross country skiing!  Here’s a  few hints.  First, dress appropriately, no whimpy Spring Skiing outfits – this is real cold.  Even for high aerobic cross country skiing consider an extra insulating layer this weekend.  Wear downhill gloves of heavy mittens.  Don’t be afraid to use hand and foot warmers.  They’re only a couple of dollars at most ski shops.  Take shorter ski trips and drink lots of hot drinks.  Kids get cold easily so don’t tackle a long tour on a cold day – short and sweet – then go inside by the fire.  Even below zero and windy has it’s own allure and magic.  You will always be able to tell the story – remember that cold day skiing…

This might be a good opportunity to get out and enjoy some of the smaller ski centers that haven’t had this good a skiing in years.  Try out Tree Haven Trails (Bob’s Trees), Galway, NY or Mountain Trails in Tannersville, NY or

Latest Conditions Jan 16, 2014

There is still plenty of skiing – and surprising good cover in many areas.  So, trail counts and surface quality will improve with even small amounts of new snow.  Lake Placid has recorded 2″ of new snow and Mt. Van Hovenberg will reopen tomorrow on some of the flatter terrain.  Further to the South Garnet Hill is open with some new snow (1″+).  Much the same with Lapland Lake (2″) and Osceola.  This makes a huge difference in the skiing – again with good base cover – some nice skiing is on tap for MLK Weekend.  Picture is from Lapland Jan. 16, 2014.  Latest Ski Conditions
